Shanghai Grand Opera House | Shanghai, China
The Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Snøhetta, is defined by a striking helical roof that unfolds like an opening fan, creating a cascading spiral of stairs that connects the building to the surrounding riverside plaza. This innovative design blurs the line between a performance venue and a public park, inviting visitors to walk across the roof for panoramic views of the city.
Over the course of several years, StudioSZ was commissioned by the architect to document the construction process of this incredible architectural marvel.

The goal of this effort was a departure from the conventional architectural shoot. What we needed to capture was less about technical precision and more about consistently showing up and documenting the construction progress at regular intervals throughout the building process. There is an honesty to photographing a project at this stage. We love being able to capture the complexity of engineering that eventually lay beneath the finished surfaces.

The main challenges for this long-term effort were most around scheduling and access. Given the project’s significance to the city and Shanghai government, we were only able to access the site with our client and on specific days. Aligning those shoot days with ideal weather conditions proved to be a challenge, but one that we managed to pull off.

Capturing one of China’s most anticipated projects over the course of four years has been one of the highlights of our career in architectural photography. Witnessing and documenting such an ambitious project is a dream gig. Through countless site visits, we were able to come away with an expansive set of images that showcase the evolution of this iconic project in Shanghai.
